What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels like gas, oil, coal, and wood burn incompletely. Faulty boilers, blocked flues, and poorly ventilated spaces are common causes of dangerous CO buildup in homes.

Symptoms of CO Poisoning

CO poisoning symptoms are often mistaken for flu. Watch for:

• Headaches and dizziness
• Nausea and vomiting
• Tiredness and confusion
• Shortness of breath
• Stomach pain
• Loss of consciousness (in severe cases)

If symptoms improve when you leave the house and return when you come back, CO may be the cause.

Where to Install CO Alarms

• In every room with a gas, oil, or solid fuel appliance
• In hallways near bedrooms
• At least 1 metre away from the appliance
• At head height in living areas, higher in bedrooms

Choosing a CO Alarm

Look for alarms certified to EN 50291 standard. Digital display models show CO levels even before the alarm sounds. Replace alarms every 5-7 years as recommended by manufacturers.

Preventing CO Buildup

• Annual boiler servicing: Have your boiler checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer every year
• Never block vents: Keep air vents clear and unobstructed
• Check flues: Ensure flues are not blocked by birds nests or debris
• Proper ventilation: Never use outdoor gas appliances indoors

What to Do If Your CO Alarm Sounds

1. Stop using all appliances and open windows and doors
2. Evacuate everyone from the property immediately
3. Call the National Gas Emergency line: 0800 111 999
4. Seek medical attention if anyone has symptoms
5. Do not return until a Gas Safe engineer confirms it is safe

Legal Requirements

Since October 2022, landlords in England must install CO alarms in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance (excluding gas cookers). Scotland and Wales have similar requirements.
