Combi boilers — the default for most UK homes

Around 80% of installs I do in 2026 are combi. They're efficient (90%+ ERP A-rated), take up no cupboard space, and there's no waiting for water to heat up. But they have limits.

Combi works if: you have one bathroom, 1–3 people, and mains cold pressure above 1.5 bar. Combi struggles when: two showers run at once, you have a bath and shower running simultaneously, or your incoming main is a 15mm lead pipe delivering weak pressure.

System boilers — the underrated middle ground

System boilers store hot water in an unvented cylinder (usually airing-cupboard sized). That means every tap in the house gets mains-pressure hot water at the same time. If you have two bathrooms and a family of four, this is almost always the right answer.

Downside: cylinder recovery — if the tank is drained by three back-to-back showers, you wait 25–40 minutes for it to reheat. Upside: they pair beautifully with future solar PV or a heat pump.

Regular (heat-only) — mostly a like-for-like replacement

If you already have a loft tank and cylinder and don't want the plaster damage of a full re-pipe, a regular boiler is the least-disruptive swap.
