Why Your Radiators Are Cold at the Bottom (UK Guide)
A Gas Safe engineer explains why radiators go cold at the bottom, how to tell sludge from airlocks, and when a powerflush is worth the money.
I'm Andy Smoothy — 22 years on the tools as a Gas Safe heating engineer. Cold-at-the-bottom radiators are one of the most common callouts I get from November onwards, and nine times out of ten it isn't the boiler that's the problem. Here's how to work out what's really going on before you spend money you don't need to.
Cold at the top vs cold at the bottom — they mean different things
If the top of the radiator is cold and the bottom is warm, that's trapped air — bleed it. If the bottom is cold and the top is warm, you've got magnetite sludge settling in the base of the panel. Sludge is iron oxide from the inside of your steel radiators corroding over years. It's heavy, it drops to the bottom, and it stops the hot water reaching the lower half of the fins.
The 3-minute diagnosis I do on every callout
- Turn the heating on and let it run for 20 minutes.
- Feel the radiator from top to bottom with the flat of your hand.
- Check the lockshield (the plastic-capped valve on the return side) — if it's stone cold while the TRV side is hot, flow isn't getting through.
If more than one radiator is cold at the bottom, or the boiler is making a kettling noise, sludge is almost certainly system-wide. If it's just one radiator, it might just need balancing.
What you can try yourself
Balance the radiators first
Nine out of ten "cold radiator" jobs I attend get sorted by rebalancing. Fully open every lockshield, run the heating, then close each one down until every radiator reaches the same surface temperature. It costs nothing.
Add a proper inhibitor
A 500ml bottle of MC1+ or Sentinel X100 dosed into the F&E tank (or via a radiator on a sealed system) will slow future corrosion. It won't dissolve sludge that's already there — but it stops the problem getting worse while you plan next steps.
When you need a powerflush (and when you don't)
If four or more radiators are cold at the bottom, the return pipe to the boiler runs cool, or you can see brown water when you bleed, you're likely at the powerflush stage. A proper machine-driven flush costs £400–£650 in most of the UK. Cheaper "chemical flushes" for £150 rarely shift heavy sludge — insist on a magnetic filter fitted afterwards or you'll be doing it again in three years.
Before booking a powerflush, take a serious look at whether your annual boiler service included a magnetic filter clean. If it didn't, that's the first thing I'd fix.
When it's cheaper to replace the radiator
A single-panel radiator costs £45–£90 plus an hour's labour. If just one radiator is badly sludged and the rest of the system is clean, swapping it is usually cheaper than flushing the whole house.
Where a cover plan saves you
Sludge damage kills pumps, diverter valves and heat exchangers. If you're on a decent boiler cover plan, those breakdowns are covered — but most policies exclude the flush itself because it's classed as maintenance. FAQ
Can I flush my own system?
You can drain and refill with fresh water and inhibitor — but you can't replicate a powerflush machine's pressure and reverse-flow action. DIY chemical flushes rarely fix a properly sludged system.
Will a magnetic filter stop this happening again?
Yes, largely. A MagnaClean or Fernox TF1 fitted on the return traps magnetite before it can settle. Combined with annual inhibitor dosing, you'll add years to the system.
How often should I bleed my radiators?
Once a year, at the start of the heating season. If you're bleeding more often than that, you have a system leak or a failing expansion vessel — get it checked.
