Powerflushing: What It Costs, When You Need It, What to Watch For
UK powerflushing costs, warning signs, and how to avoid overpaying — from an engineer who has flushed hundreds of systems.
Powerflushing is one of the most oversold jobs in the heating trade. Half the quotes I see are legitimate; the other half are cash-grabs on systems that just needed balancing. Here's how to tell the difference and what a fair 2026 UK price looks like.
What a powerflush actually is
A machine (usually a Kamco CF90 or Fernox PowerFlow) is connected in place of the pump or across the flow and return. It cycles chemically-treated water at high velocity and reversing direction through every radiator and the boiler heat exchanger to shift magnetite sludge and limescale. A proper flush takes 4–8 hours depending on system size.
Genuine warning signs you need one
- Four or more radiators cold at the bottom (see our cold-radiator diagnosis guide).
- Boiler kettling — banging or knocking noises from the boiler.
- Slow warm-up (over 40 minutes to reach temperature).
- Brown or black water when you bleed radiators.
- Pump seizing repeatedly.
- Boiler cutting out on overheat.
One or two of those symptoms? Try balancing and a magnetic filter first. Four or more? Get a flush quoted.

Anything below £250 is almost certainly a chemical flush being sold as a powerflush. Anything above £900 for a standard semi is opportunistic.
Red flags on the quote
- No magnetic filter fitted afterwards — walk away. The filter is £120 fitted and stops recurrence.
- No before/after TDS reading — reputable engineers will show you.
- "Chemical flush" for £150 pitched as equivalent — it isn't; it can't shift heavy sludge.
- No inhibitor dose afterwards — mandatory per BS 7593.
Cheaper alternatives to try first
If you only have mild symptoms, book an annual boiler service and ask the engineer to clean the magnetic filter, dose fresh inhibitor and balance the system. That's a £110 job that fixes 30% of "sludge" callouts I attend.
